OPERATION JOHN PAUL JONES


During Operation John Paul Jones 2-502 IN was Task Organized under 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. C/2-502 IN during the period of 16 through 30 August fell under TF Bravo operations with A/2-17 CAV. Operation John Paul Jones mission had multiple phases of operations. The IFFV directed 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division to seize and hold vital terrain and installations in VUNG RO Pass and Highway 1 between VUNG RO BAY and the 2nd Korean Marine Brigade AO, to provide protection for engineer work parties in the bay area along the line of communication, to relieve the 2nd Korean Marin Brigade in the area south of TUY HOA, and to be prepared to exploit B-52 strikes. Later in the operation the mission was expanded to include conducting search and destroy operations between KY LO Valley and VUNG RO BAY and protecting civilians during the initial states of the rice harvest at TUY AN.
