OPERATION LAMAR PLAIN


Operation LAMAR PLAIN commenced on 16 May 1969 in an area 16km southwest of Tam Ky in Quang Tin Province. The three battalions under control of 1st BDE, 101st ABN DIV (AM), had the mission to find, fix and destroy VC/NVA main force units operating in the vicinity of BA 117 and posing a threat to Tam Ky City, the provincial headquarters. The 1st BN, 501st ABN INF and 1st BN, 502nd ABN INF moved to Quang Tin Province to reinforce 23d INF (Americal) DIV elements in the Tam Ky area. The operation terminated on 13 August 1969. Enemy losses during the three-month period were 524 killed. In addition, 62 crew-served and 256 individual weapons were captured. US casualties were 105 killed and 332 wounded of whom 297 were evacuated. The operation was supported by 1,342 tactical air strikes. Elements of the NVA 2d DIV were contacted during the operation.

The combat operation mission of Lamar Plain was for the 1st BDE, 101st ABN DIV will move with two battalions and designated support elements to the Americal Division currenlty operating in Southern I Corps and come under their operational control for immediate combat operations to relieve the pressure of Tam Ky Province and its heaquarters. During the concept of operations the 1st BDE and supporting elements conducted extensive airmobile and reconnaisance in force operations with three maneuver battalions, supported by one direct support artillery battalion and one air cavalry troop providing aerial and ground reconnaissance.
