John A. Hoefling, MG (R) passed away on October 24, 2018. John attended US Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1946. John served as a Captain in the Korean War where he was awarded the Silver Star Medal. In Vietnam War he was awarded his second Silver Star Medal when he was serving as the 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, Brigade Commander. He served for a year in Vietnam and the normal tour for command was six months. During his time as the Brigade Commander the Brigade participated in A Shau Valley many of times, but he was best noted for the Battle at Vinh Loc in October 1968, which he planned and executed.
